Appliance Installation Instructions
Gas cooking appliances must always be installed in accordance with the appliance manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Ensure you have a copy of the installation instructions
- Remember that installation requirements may be different for a different appliance, model and/or manufacturer. Ensure you are familiar with the installation requirements for the particular appliance being installed.
Hose connections
Flexible hose may be used between the rigid piping and slide-out cooker to provide for movement of the appliance.
Hoses used for this purpose must have a working pressure of at least 14kPa and a working temperature range of at least 65OC. Hoses certified to AS/NZS 1869 (Class A, B, C or D) satisfy this requirement.
Flexible hose must be a single, continuous piece and as short as possible for the necessary function. This prevents kinking and damage to the hose during slide-out movements.
The hose assembly must be connected permanently by a metal connection at both the piping and the appliance.
This can be satisfied by the use of a metal gas bayonet connection into the fixed pipework of the RV.
For full details, refer to AS/NZS 5601.2:2020 clauses 5.2.5, 5.1.4.2, 5.1.4.3 and 2.10.4.
Piping supports
All piping used in gas installations is required to be supported and restrained at regular intervals. This includes any piping in a slide-out cooker unit.
Piping must be supported with prefabricated clips of the same material as the pipe, or a compatible one and fastened securely (e.g. with rivets, screws, nuts and bolts). Important note: plastic clips or cable ties are not acceptable!
Supports (clips) must be provided within 150mm of any bend, elbow, tee or branch fitting. Elsewhere, supports on rigid piping must be at spacings no greater than 600mm on a horizontal run and 1250mm on a vertical run.
Piping that passes through any metalwork must be protected by a rubber grommet or equivalent protection. Alternatively, bulkhead fittings may be used.
Piping in all other areas must be protected against abrasion, kinking or deformation.
Gas appliances must not be installed in such a way as they are supported by the gas piping, unless that piping has been specifically designed to take the applied loads.
For full details, refer to AS/NZS 5601.2:2020 clauses 5.2.1, 5.2.11, 6.3.3.

Stowage
A slide-out appliance must have a means of preventing the flow of gas when the appliance is stowed. A gas shutoff valve will achieve this requirement.
Note: appliances installed under an after-market cover or inside an enclosed compartment are considered to be stowed.
Alternatively, a design that requires the supply hose to be disconnected in order to stow the appliance may comply. In this case, it is critical to assess the length of the supply hose – a hose that is too long may permit the stowing of the appliance while connected.

For full details, refer to AS/NZS 5601.2:2020 clauses 2.9.5, 6.3.2.
Appliance specifications
Any appliance installed in an RV gas system must be fitted with a flame safeguard system on each burner. This is a safety feature that shuts off the flow of gas in the event of the burner flame being extinguished.
This requirement also applies to any equipment connected to the RV through a gas bayonet.
It is important to realise that gas equipment certified to the standards for portable outdoor appliances is not required to have this feature. So, if you are installing a BBQ or supplying one with the vehicle, it is important to check its specifications – some will have the necessary features, but a certification label alone does not confirm that.
Note: There are changes coming through component standards that will require appliances and their packaging to clearly identify whether the appliance is suitable for use in caravans and boats. In the meantime, ask your suppliers to confirm.
Gas appliances designed for internal installation must be installed internally (which may include within an annex or awning).
Alternatively, if installed externally such appliances must be provided with suitable weather protection to ensure safe and correct operation. This may take the form of covers, wind shields. Be sure to refer to the appliance manufacturer’s instructions for guidance on recommended methods of weather protection. Consumer usage instructions may also be necessary to ensure adequate protection of the appliance.
Gas appliances designed for external installation shall only be installed in an outdoor location. Note that enclosed annexes/tents do not provide sufficient ventilation to be considered outdoors.
Guidance on outdoor locations is provided in AS/NZS 5601.2 Appendix K.
Appliance certification programs cover appliances for differing purposes, with the distinctions not necessarily immediately obvious to a casual observer. For example, AGA certification labels for a kitchen cooker are blue, whereas the corresponding label for an external portable BBQ is red.
Ensure that you are aware of the component standard that has been used to certify any appliance, as that will guide the correct installation and usage.
For full details, refer to AS/NZS 5601.2:2020 clauses 6.4, 6.1.4 and Appendix K.
